April Whincop
I am a Breastfeeding Consultant operating in Bristol and surrounding counties. I help women find breastfeeding solutions to their breastfeeding problems and respect every mother’s journey with breastfeeding.
My history and training
I breastfed my own two children beyond infancy in the 1990s with the help of La Leche League (LLL) and other mothers, becoming a voluntary breastfeeding counsellor in 1994.
Since then, I’ve met thousands of mothers and babies face-to-face and on the helpline. I bring this long experience of helping breastfeeding from the first hours through to toddlerhood (and beyond!) to my current work.
In 2001 I became an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) and I re-certified in 2011 and again in August 2016. After 20+ years experience, I maintain up-to-date lactation knowledge and skills through further high quality training and face-to-face and Zoom consultations.
Initially, I was in the LLL GB team offering Peer Counsellor Programme training to health professionals throughout the UK. Since 2008 I’ve been with Barnardo’s where I’ve developed volunteer and paid peer support programmes in the city in partnership with NHS Bristol and – since 2015 – with South Gloucestershire Public Health too.
I still facilitate breastfeeding social and support groups for mums and babies of all ages, and continue to offer antenatal breastfeeding sessions for individual women and groups. Postnatally, I work one-to-one with families.
I have an enhanced CRB check and hold professional liability insurance.
I completed a 2 year part-time training in 2016 to become a Macrobiotic Health Coach and Guide, with the International School of Macrobiotics, nr Totnes, Devon.
